Great Britain is going to reduce military contingent in Iraq
The British prime-minister Toni Blair has officially informed that Great Britain is intended to reduce a military contingent in Iraq up to 5, 5 thousand soldiers from 7, 2 thousand soldiers by the end of spring. Addressing to deputies of parliament, the prime-minister has also told that military operations in Basra are completed, and now the Iraq authorities will play the dominant role in keeping safety and peace in this region.
Now the most part of the British contingent is billeted in Basra.
The prime-minister has noted, that Basra still remains a dangerous area, however, now, the situation there is much quieter, than a situation in capital of the country. Blair has told that the safety inside of the country and granting to Iraqis of an opportunity to build the democratic state is an overall objective of the British contingent in Iraq. The prime-minister has explained that their purpose is to show terrorists, that they cannot win.
According to Blair’s words, it is important to show to Iraq people, that Great Britain is not measured to hold their militaries in the country longer, than it would be required. The prime-minister has expressed confidence that the next chapter of Basra’s history will be written by the Iraqis.
